For What Binds

Lime and linen fiber
Installation View at Dieu Donné Papermill Gallery

This installation of paper works depict various tools used in lime production: the silhouette of a coal-burning kiln, the extracted arch of a kiln’s entrance, a small cylinder of lime used in theater lighting. I am interested in the kiln as the site of transformation from geological material into anthropocentric resource.

For these works I grind the handmade lime up to varying degrees — sometimes into a fine, cement-like substance, sometimes leaving hints to the material origin. Here, the top arch is made from limestone. The bottom arch reveals bits of oyster shell embedded in the work.
